Douglas Warren Dietz passed away unexpectedly on July 8, 2010 after a brief illness. He is survived by his wife Patricia; three grown children, Jeffrey, Debi Pisko and Kevin; and 14 grandchildren.
Doug came to the Naval Academy after three years in the fleet. After graduation, Doug served aboard the USS Brownson (DD-868), USS Truxton (CGN-35), USS Badger (FF-1071) and USS Miller (FF-1091). His shore tours included: NORAD in Cheyenne Mountain, Colorado Springs; Squadron Material Officer for DESRON 28; Naval War College; Naval Space Command NSWC Dahlgren, VA; and the JCS Staff (J3) in Washington, DC. Following retirement from the Navy in 1990, Doug received his securities license and sold securities until fully retiring in 2014. Doug and Pat moved into their dream home – a home with 2.5 acres in beautiful Hickory, North Carolina. Doug enjoyed traveling with Pat around the United States as well as a number of cruises.
In the words of Pat, his wife and partner for more than 40 years, “I know for a fact that those four years that Doug spent at USNA were some of the best times of his life. Whenever he would start telling Academy stories – especially about Plebe Year – he would have everyone laughing. He seemed to have an endless stash of fun things to talk about; as a matter of fact, I sometimes wondered how he had the time to pass his classes! I know he was very excited about seeing everyone in the 9th Company at the 40th reunion. Be certain he will be there in spirit telling his corny jokes and reminiscing about Plebe Year.”
